For the record, I love dogs. Unfortunately, I don’t own one, but I work at a hotel that loves pets, and I have many friends that have pets so I can always get a doggie fix if needed.
For many people, pets are treated like family and rightfully so. St. Pete, being the awesome place it is to live, work and play, is one of the most dog-friendly cities in Florida, if not the U.S. If I were a dog, I would want to live here, too. There’s a great hotel to hang out at (Loews Don CeSar), great parks, restaurants and even a doggie beach! Matter of fact, BringFido.com named St. Pete as one of the Top 10 Dog Friendly places to vacation in Florida.
With so many “doggone” choices of places to go and things to do when visiting St. Pete with your pooch, I thought I would share three of my favorite (all which get a Five Paw rating).
Bark at the Beach!
Fort De Soto Paw Playground & Beach is frequently named one of the Top 10 dog-friendly beaches, and is heralded as one of the South’s Best Dog Parks by Southern Living Magazine. Just a 10-minute drive from the Pink Palace, the popular dog beach is as fun for dogs as it is humans. Dogs of all sizes can put their paws in the white sugar sand, swim in the Gulf, or, if you have the equipment, even go stand-up paddle boarding or surfing! The park has separate areas for large and small dogs and cooling stations with dog-level water fountains and even doggie showers.
Dog Bars, Parks and Woof Walks, oh my!
Downtown St. Pete is a dog lover’s pet paradise. You’ll see pets of all sizes taking the woof walk down eclectic Central Avenue, checking out the latest doggie fashions at the Southeastern Guide Dogs Dog Boutique, or dining at one of the areas many cafes and lounges, including the new Kings Street Food Counter or The Dog Bar (great place for both dogs and their owners!).
Many merchants are dog-friendly, and provide free doggie treats and water stations. Need a cup of Java? Brew d’ Licious is one of the neighborhood’s more popular local coffee shops and at times there can be more pets than people enjoying a jolt of java. Not far away is the Northshore Dog Park, a great spot to let your pet run wild and for you to meet some of us “locals.” After the long day, kick back with your pooch at one of our local craft breweries — Green Bench Brewing Co. is always a Pawfect Place!
I would be in the dog house if I didn’t mention our own Loews Don CeSar! I was fan of this hotel brand before I started working for them. The way Loews welcomes pets make the hotel company the natural choice for a place to stay when visiting Tampa Bay (or anywhere else there is a Loews Hotel!).
Here at the Pink Palace, every dog is a Top Dog. Each pet is welcomed with its own in-room amenities, including doggie bowl, mat, tag and more. There is even a special in-room dining pet menu featuring Bow Wow Chicken and Chow Hound. And if you want to really treat your pet, take him/her for a bite at the Sea Porch and order off the special Bark Bite menu followed by an in-room doggie massage by one of our therapists from Spa Oceana. Yes, I did say Doggie Massage!
“Chow” for now!
