I bet when you read “skip the gym” you thought I was going to give you the secret of how to not have to work out, right? Sorry to trick you… but while you’re here, you might as well hear my secret for staying fit: Find workouts that you LOVE. I’ve been active my entire life, but really struggled to find a workout that worked for me. I then discovered martial arts and it kept me in shape for over a decade. Do you know why? Because I LOVED going to work out. It was fun and exciting, and I worked out with people that I enjoyed the company of.

So what is one of the best ways to find what workout you love? Try new things! One of my favorite fitness gurus does what she calls “speed dating” for different workouts. Barre, Zumba, spin, kickboxing — whatever sounds interesting to you! Get out there and check them out. My favorite workouts now are ones that show me something new, or let me escape to somewhere different and interesting. The most interesting gym isn’t a gym at all: it’s the outdoors! Here are my top three outdoor workouts:

Beach Yoga

This is an easy one to do yourself. All you need is a yoga mat and any public beach. You would be totally amazed at how relaxing it is to do a workout you may already do (yoga, or pick something else!) in a totally new environment. This is one that isn’t difficult to pull off. Try your favorite routine, or jump online and find a new yoga sequence that you’ve never tried before.

Even though this concept is similar, it’s a bit more difficult to do on your own. Docks can be a bit trickier to access, but if you live near one, or come upon one with open access on your travels, grab your yoga mat and start the zen! The yoga experience next to the moving water and surrounded by beautiful boats really does take it to the next level. And don’t worry, if you can’t get your mat to the right dock, you can of course do this class at Loews Coronado Bay Resort.

Okay, this one is my favorite. Seriously, this is one of my favorite workouts. Here at the resort, you grab a spin bike and pair of Beats by Dre headphones and you spin while enjoying the beautiful view of our Crown Isle Marina. Truly, this almost doesn’t feel like exercise because it’s so beautiful. Obviously, it’s a bit more difficult to drag a stationary bike outdoors, but come on down to the hotel and you will be able to experience this workout firsthand. (Warning: going back to looking at a wall or mirror on your spin bike might be impossible after this class).
