New York City has a way of capturing your imagination. Have you ever dreamed of your own Manhattan pied-à-terre or wanted to know what it’s like to be a New Yorker, or perhaps better yet, a Park Avenue resident?
The team at Loews Regency New York, a cornerstone of Park Avenue for more than 50 years, takes great pride in creating a NYC home for all our guests. I sat down with veteran VIP Manager Christopher Koliopoulos to ask him not only what makes the Loews Regency a true home away from home for so many guests, but also for a story or two from his long tenure.
What makes the Loews Regency like a home for guests, both long-time and first time?
First, there’s the immediate intimacy of our small lobby, which has the feeling of an Upper East side residential building. You’re welcomed in by our doorman much like you would be greeted if this was your NYC apartment. There are also many great suite options in the hotel that offer the conveniences of home with full-service kitchens and space for entertaining. Beyond that and most importantly, it’s all about getting to know you. It’s very important we get to know you, our guests, and we make the time for this. When guests return, we see each visit as an opportunity to build your profile and know more about what will make your time in New York the very best.
Walking through our lobby, you might get the sense that guests and staff are old friends – how has this come about?
That’s certainly true in many cases – some of our guests have been coming here for decades. It’s part of our culture that we build relationships with our guests, which often happens over time when people return for various reasons. We try to find opportunities to engage new and long-time guests alike. Over the holidays for example, when the lobby was at its busiest, we passed around Li-Lac Chocolates – a New York chocolatier – and simply chit chatted with guests. It was a great way to open up conversation, and get to hear about the reason for a guest’s visit and make some recommendations, plus it was a nice social atmosphere.
For the hotel’s long-term guests, they get an introduction with our VIP team, we contact them before their stay to get to know their preferences, and we ensure suites are set up to meet their daily needs.
What might the VIP team help guests with in a typical week?
We figure all kinds of things out – with enough time, we will make it happen. Frequent items we’re helping with include transportation and amenities or conveniences in a room that will make it just as comfortable as home. When you have a special occasion like an anniversary or want to know about the best restaurants, I’ll introduce you to our Concierge team and put you in their exceptionally knowledgeable hands. The same goes for a special shopping request you might have – why shop like any other day when we can set you up with a personal shopper?
Do you remember a time when a guest embraced Loews Regency as their Park Avenue home?
Yes, just this past Christmas we had a family flying in from South America on Christmas Day. The family wanted their children to be able to experience Christmas like being at home, and so our Chef Concierge ensured their suite was fully decorated, including presents under the tree!
What’s your favorite thing about our location?
The proximity to everything. We’re right in the heart of the city. At the same time, the Loews Regency is in a residential neighborhood, by design. Our location really makes it feel like you’re in the neighborhood. I like to say it’s off the beaten track but in the heart of everything. It’s in great proximity to Central Park, and the shopping at Bloomingdale’s and Madison Avenue and 5th Avenue.
Whether it’s a long weekend adventure or a sabbatical stay you seek, the team at Loews Regency New York is ready to open our doors and say, “Welcome to your Park Avenue home.”
