Ride a Pony in Santa Monica

A farmer’s market may not be the first activity that comes to mind when thinking of something to do with your children. But Santa Monica has found a way to incorporate fun activities into their farmer’s markets that will be sure to engage your kids while you get some shopping done.

The Sunday morning Main Street Farmer’s Market is a favorite family activity. Early-rising parents can grab their fresh-roasted coffee while kids do arts and crafts, get their faces painted and sing and dance along to kid-friendly live bands.

Santa Monica’s farmer’s markets offer some of the world’s freshest produce, so, while the kids are busy riding ponies, parents can pick out ingredients for a healthy dinner (to which kids will likely respond, “Eww vegetables!”).

Splash Around

After exploring one of Santa Monica’s famous outdoor farmer’s markets, let the kids cool off at Douglas Park’s splash pad. Santa Monica has a wealth of good parks to choose from, but Douglas Park seems to have it all. Kids will especially enjoy feeding the ducks at the duck pond and climbing around on the sandy playground. Other popular park features include reflective pools and streams and shady picnic tables. With lawn bowling, tennis courts and fly fishing, kids won’t out of things to do here.

Check out the Scene

Are your kids getting stir crazy watching movies from the couch?  Get them out of the house with Santa Monica Pier’s Front Porch Cinema. Every fall, the Santa Monica Pier hosts a series of Friday movie nights during which popular kid-friendly movies are projected onto a huge open air screen under the stars and with a view of the ocean.

With family favorite movies, music (there is a pre-show DJ) and food, Front Porch Cinema has something for everyone. A unique and free community event, enjoy experiencing the Pier as it is transformed into a cozy front porch environment. Pack a picnic or grab a bite there, and don’t forget to bring blankets and lawn chairs — or you can rent what they call “old timey chairs” there.

With endless options to choose from, let Santa Monica bring out the kid in you.
